ServeUP 2020 will again be focused on disaster relief.
Houston & Puerto Rico both have faced real tragedies in the past year. The need is real and there is critical work to be done to help rebuild lives through rebuilding homes. So, ServeUP will continue to be located in Houston this year and we are adding 3 weeks of service to Puerto Rico!
During the past 13 years, over 7500 students from over 60 New England campuses have served with Serveup to rebuilt homes, joined in rebuilding lives, developed deep friendships with one another, and considered challenging issues of faith and justice while serving the people of New Orleans, Tampa, Baton Rouge and Houston. This year, we will serve the people and cities of Houston, as well as the Island of Puerto Rico.

Some Facts:
IMPACT ON PEOPLE & HOMES
- In 2005, 134,000 homes were destroyed or damaged in New Orleans as a result of Hurricane Katrina.
- In Aug 2016, 110,000 homes were destroyed in Baton Rouge as a result of flooding.
- In Aug 2017, 185,000 homes were impacted in Houston as a result of Hurricane Harvey.
- There were 3 times the number of homes impacted in Southeast Texas by Hurricane Harvey as there were in New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina .
- Over 1 million people in Southeast Texas were displaced from their homes as a result of Hurricane Harvey.
- Hurricane Maria impacted every person on the island of Puerto Rico and some are still without power 1 year later.
- Puerto Rico originally reported 64 deaths due to Hurricane Maria. Now the official number (as of 8/28/18) is 2975 deaths due to Maria. Double that of Hurricane Katrina.
ECONOMIC IMPACT
- Hurricane Katrina was the costliest disaster in US history at $120 billion. Hurricane Harvey will surpass that cost.
- In 2005 in New Orleans, 50% of homes and businesses had flood insurance, compared to this past year's disasters: Baton Rouge with 21% and Houston with 17%.
- Hurricane Harvey impacted more geography and population than Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy (in New York/New Jersey) put together.
- The devastation is not as obvious for those of us who have been to a third world country. But, for each homeowner who has lost everything, it’s devastating. Many families have three feet of water in their home. All of their furniture, cabinets, electricals, walls, floors, and possessions are unsalvageable.
